6th Grade

Evelyn started 6th Grade this week! She is attending public school again, after three years of home school. We were pretty nervous about going back, but as soon as we walked in the school we felt like, "Oh, yeah! I remember this!" She is fitting back in rather smoothly.
One of the problems we have run into, however is that there is not enough time in the day: and I'm not just whining about how little I see her! Evelyn wants to be involved in EVERYTHING! Here's a short list: school choir, ballroom, the school play, guitar lessons, piano lessons, voice lessons and performance classes, ballet lessons, and jazz lessons. I would love to support all of these good things, but we are going to have to prioritize the most important ones because let's face it: she needs to do homework too...not to mention have a social life.
We've been so blessed having her mostly home the last three years:  but I realize it can't last forever. I feel a little like we are leaving the garden on Eden for the lone and dreary world: Things were so beautiful and pleasant in the garden and I wish it could last forever. But I realize that would limit her learning and experience. Yes, there will be hard times at school, but that is precisely what she needs to learn to deal with.
Another hard choice we had to make this year dealt with getting her ADHD medicated. Evelyn is super high functioning, and I wish I could have let her learn to focus on her own. But this summer her focus was so scatterbrained she almost got hit by cars on 5 different occasions. When ADHD threatens her life, its time to do something about it. She is doing so well on the medication, too: no side effects!
